AHNS Journal Editor Self-Nominations

Position Overview:

The AHNS is launching a new peer-reviewed journal focused on head and neck surgery, oncology, and related multidisciplinary research. We seek an experienced and dynamic Editor to lead the journal’s development, editorial strategy, and publication process. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in head and neck surgery or oncology, prior editorial experience, and a vision for establishing the journal as a leading resource in the field.

Key Responsibilities:

1.   Journal Leadership & Strategy:

  • Develop the journal’s mission, scope, and editorial policies in collaboration with the AHNS Executive Committee.
  • Establish the journal as a high-impact publication in head and neck surgery and oncology.
  • Define and implement strategies to increase submissions, readership, and indexing in major databases.

2.  Editorial Oversight:

  • Manage the peer-review process, ensuring timely, rigorous, and fair evaluation of submissions.
  • Recruit and oversee an editorial board of renowned experts in head and neck surgery and related disciplines.
  • Collaborate with associate editors, reviewers, and the AHNS leadership on content selection and journal direction.
  • The expectation is that you will have to commit to a certain number of reviews each year (TBD) and will also have to help ensure reviewers are timely in their reviews.
  • Establish a deep bench of reviewers through personal and reputational connections and gravitas.

3.  Content Development & Quality Control:

  • Solicit high-quality manuscripts, including original research, reviews, commentaries, and clinical guidelines.
  • Ensure all published content meets ethical and scientific standards.
  • Work with authors to refine manuscripts for clarity, accuracy, and impact.

4.  Publishing & Production:

  • Liaise with the publisher on production timelines, formatting, and online dissemination.
  • Oversee the journal’s digital presence, including website optimization and social media engagement.
  • Monitor key performance metrics (e.g., citations, downloads) and adjust strategies as needed.

5.   Engagement & Advocacy:

  • Represent the journal at AHNS meetings, conferences, and other relevant events.
  • Promote the journal to researchers, clinicians, and institutions globally.
  • Foster relationships with key opinion leaders and societies to enhance collaboration.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Current Active AHNS member.
• Strong academic record with prior editorial experience
• Familiarity with peer-review management systems.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Vision for innovation in academic publishing (e.g., open access).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience as an editor-in-chief or deputy editor of a major medical journal.
• Track record of high impact published research in head and neck surgery/oncology.
• Knowledge of emerging trends in scholarly publishing.
• Industry contacts to help with advertising and support.

Compensation, Term and Timeline:

• The AHNS is currently negotiating with its publisher to define the annual stipend
• The term is for three years (July 2025-July 2028), with an option to renew
• Final candidates will be asked to be interviewed in person at COSM in May 2025 in New Orleans. A decision will be made by Summer 2025.
