I grew up in Texas and went to Harvard University for college, where I majored in Chemistry and Physics. I then joined the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Chicago, where I earned a PhD in Cell Biology in addition to my MD. I received my general otolaryngology training at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, with a subsequent fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and trans-oral robotic surgery (TORS) at the University of Pennsylvania.Together with Nathan Boyd, another fellowship-trained head and neck surgeon at the University of New Mexico, I have launched the first TORS program in the state, offering people with oropharyngeal cancer a minimally-invasive surgical treatment option. Many such cancers are caused by human papillomavirus, the causative agent in most cervical cancers, and my research laboratory is focused on early detection of these HPV-related cancers of the tonsils and tongue base.
