Clarence T. Sasaki, MD, is the Charles W. Ohse Professor of Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine. He received his BA from PomonaCollege in 1962 and his MD from Yale in 1966. He did his internship at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1969 he spent a year in Vietnam as a Captain in the U.S. Army’s 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang.He completed his residency at the Yale-New Haven Medical Center in 1973. Although he began his career in the laboratory, he moved to the operating room and then around the world through funding by the UICC in order to learn new surgical skills and techniques for treating head and neck cancer. As a surgeon, Dr. Sasaki became intrigued by European techniques that weren’t being used in this country. In 1978, he went to Milan to work with Ettore Bocca, MD, and brought back a procedure known as the functional neck dissection, removing only the diseased tissue and preserving the essential arteries, veins and nerves of the head and neck. He continued to hone his skills at the University of Zurich, where in 1982 he learned skull base surgery techniques from Ugo Fisch, MD, and in 1986 at London’s St. Mary’s Hospital, where he worked with plastic surgeon Mr. Dai Davies. He has spent his entire career dedicated to the care of head and neck cancer patients at Yale-New Haven Hospital; he has developed Yale’s Head and Neck Cancer Program and has a widely-based referral practice for tumors of the sinuses, ear, throat and neck. He has been involved in the education and training of countless medical students and residents over his 35 years at Yale, also serving as principal investigator on six separate NIH grants leading to 310 publications and 7 textbooks.Dr. Sasaki is listed in ‘Who’s Who in the East,’ ‘Who’s Who in America,’ ‘Who’s Who in Cancer,’ ‘Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care,’ ‘Who’s Who in Science and Engineering’ and ‘Who’s Who in the World.’ He is listed among Woodward & White’s ‘Best Doctors in America’, Castle Connolly’s ‘Best Doctors in New York Metro Area’ and Castle Connolly’s ‘America’s Top Doctors.
