David C. Shonka, Jr., MD has held an appointment in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Virginia since July 2010 and is currently an Associate Professor. He completed his undergraduate, medical and residency training at the University of Virginia from 1996 to 2009. After completion of his residency training, he completed a clinical fellowship in head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Iowa. Dr. Shonka also received special training in minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid surgery as well as transoral robotic surgery with use of the da Vinci surgical system. His clinical interests include thyroid cancer, benign thyroid disorders, parathyroid surgery, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, salivary gland malignancies, cutaneous malignancies, and complex reconstruction of head and neck defects with free tissue transfer and pedicled flaps.
