Professor Jonas T. Johnson

Jonas T. Johnson

Jonas T. Johnson, M.D., is currently Professor and the Dr. Eugene N. Myers Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Johnson joined the faculty in Pittsburgh in 1979. He holds joint appointments as professor in radiation oncology in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, oral maxillofacial surgery in the School of Dental Medicine, and in Communication Science and Disorders in the School of Health and Rehabilitative Sciences. After attending Dartmouth College, Dr. Johnson earned his medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical Center. He completed residency at the Medical College of Virginia and SUNY Upstate.

Dr. Johnson has served the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery as secretary (1994-1998), during which time, he was a principal in the negotiations which led to the merger with the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons to form the new American Head and Neck Society. Dr. Johnson was the program chairman for the 4th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer (1996), the conference chairman of the 5th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer (2000). He served as co-secretary of the new American Head and Neck Society (1998-1999) and eventually as president of the American Head and Neck Society (2003-2004).

As you know, Jonas Johnson has also served the discipline of Otolaryngology as President of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (2003), editor of the Laryngoscope (2003-2011), and currently is president-elect of the Triologic Society (2013-2014).

Dr. Johnson has committed his life’s work to the treatment of patients with diseases of the head and neck in an environment of education and inquiry.

Dr. Johnson and his wife, Janis, have spent most of their adult lives as residents of Pittsburgh, PA, where they raised 3 sons, Olin, Rurik, and Ivar, and continue to point with pride to their 5 grandchildren, Luke, Grady, Shane, Jonas, and Lucy.
