Choosing reconstructive options for head and neck cutaneous defects requires nuanced judgment as balancing functional and aesthetic demands is challenging. As these defects can be located in previously irradiated tissue, areas of prior surgeries, poor vascular beds or in the elderly and/or frail population some reconstructive options become limited. The need to monitor for recurrence and the effect of adjuvant radiation therapy on reconstructive choices are all real-world constraints. We will emphasize discussion of multiple options for controversial defects in complex patients, equipping surgeons with practical tools to confidently reconstruct complex cutaneous defects.
Objective 1:
Compare different reconstructive options for controversial cutaneous defects.
Objective 2:
Integrate knowledge of the reconstructive ladder in evaluating and formulating plans for difficult cutaneous defects.
Objective 3:
Develop algorithm for reconstructing cutaneous defects dependent on site and patient and treatment factors.
