AHNS Young Members Corner Podcast Episode 13 – Eric Dowling, MD, Susan McCammon, MD

December 8, 2025 by AHNS Office

In Episode #13 of the AHNS Young Members Corner Podcast, Dr. Eric Dowling interviews Dr. Susan McCammon for an honest and deeply reflective discussion on the emotional and psychological resilience required in head and neck surgery.

As surgeons transition from trainees to independent decision-makers, they often face complex ethical choices, devastating complications, and the long-term emotional responsibility of caring for patients with life-altering disease. Dr. McCammon shares her insights on cultivating empathy, navigating moral distress, processing complications, and balancing vulnerability with professionalism.

Listeners will gain practical strategies to strengthen emotional resilience, support colleagues, and promote a healthier, more compassionate culture within surgical training and practice.
