AHNS Virtual Education Series: Recon ‘Round the World

Zones of Conflict
Presented by the AHNS Reconstructive Head & Neck Surgery Section

June 12, 2024
12:00 PM Eastern US/Canada/Haiti / Sudan 6:00 PM
Ukraine 7:00 PM / Yangon, Myanmar 10:30 PM

Moderator:
Kevin Higgins, MD, University of Toronto, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center

Panelists:
Dr. Safaa Merghani Awadallah, OMFS Specialist, Prince Digna Referral Hospital /Port Sudan Dental Teaching Hospital, Port Sudan, Sudan
Patrick Jean-Gilles, MD, Otolaryngologist, Clinique des Cedres, Petion-Ville, Haiti
Htut Maung Maung, MD, Senior Consultant ENT-Head and Neck Surgery, ORL-HNS Specialist Hospital, Yangon
Oleksander Lompas, MD, Plastic Surgeon, Lviv National Medical University, Lviv, Ukraine

Session Description:
We intend to hear from head and neck reconstructive surgeons with “boots on the ground” in various conflict zones across the world. While their experiences will likely vary significantly, one from the other, we seek to better inform our learners about how difficult head and neck reconstructions are managed. As this topic receives little attention in national media or our literature, hearing the experiences of these intrepid surgeons should be both eye-opening and inspiring.

Session Objectives:
1) Articulate the current state of head and neck reconstruction in various conflict zones
2) Evaluate the impact and disruption of local surgeon training and how the international community can assist.
3) Formulate logistics of operationalizing a surgical mission to aid patients in need in areas of conflict.

This one-hour session is free to all registrants!
