Mark Wax

Dr. Mark Wax is the Director of Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at OHSU’s Department of Otolaryngology-HNS. He is a Professor in the departments of Otolaryngology and Oral Maxillofacial surgery. He has served in a number of senior administrative positions within the department as well as the institution. He is currently the program director for the otolaryngology head and neck surgery residency program and has run a fellowship in advanced reconstructive surgery for the past decade. His fellows have populated multiple academic institutions and range from division chairs to chairman of departments.
Dr. Wax has been an active member of the American Head and Neck Society. He was treasurer for 6 years and then president. He was an active member of the executive group for almost a decade. He has been extremely active in the AAOHNS. These activities included a stint as the coordinator for education where he directed the educational activities of the foundation. He is currently the coordinator for meetings and thus arranges and manages the annual meeting which is one of the largest gatherings of Otolaryngologists in the world. His dedication to teaching culminated in his election as president of the otolaryngology program directors organization where he served on its executive council for many years.

Dr. Wax’s focus and interest have been on reconstruction after major head and neck oncologic oblation with a view to maximizing rehabilitation. With over 250 articles in the peer review literature he has expanded the reach of free tissue transfer in reconstruction and the rehabilitation of patients with significant defects in the head and neck. Collaborated with the Oral Maxillofacial department to improve dental rehabilitation is a particular focus at this point.
On a personal level Mark has been married to his wife Roberta for 27 years and they reside in Portland Oregon. His 2 children, Blair and Stephanie, currently reside in Washington DC. He continues to enjoy skiing, running, climbing, and traveling.
