Fellowship Curriculum for FY2024-2025

For AHNS-Accredited Fellowships – Curriculum Assignments for the 2024-2025 Fellowship Year

For your Fellowship year, the Curriculum Development & Maintenance Service of the AHNS has created this curriculum comprised of several educational resources. Each month fellows will receive a curricular assignment to review and complete. Two emails will be generated for each month’s assignment – one the last week of the previous month, and the second 2-3 weeks later as a reminder. Each month’s assignment also includes a checklist for the fellows to complete.

There are up to five different components that will make up each Monthly Assignment:

1. Standardized Fellowship Curriculum: This is an outline of high-yield material that is organized by subsite (i.e. oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, hypopharynx, etc).  It will guide you with what you need to know in these different sections.  It also includes a “Reading list” of important articles.  To access this, look out for your upcoming emails or go to the ahns.info and select the “For Trainees” tab.  Then select, “Accredited Fellowships” and “Fellowship Curriculum”. Expectation: Fellows will read at least 60% of the assigned sections.

2. Monthly Virtual Tumor Boards: held from 7-8 pm EST usually on the first Wednesday of every month, these sessions involve 3 case presentations in tumor board format along with discussions by nationally recognized experts in the field to provide their perspective and pearls of wisdom.  You, the fellows, will be asked to serve as case presenters in these sessions and will work with a faculty mentor within your department to prepare cases.  These are lively and engaging.  Past sessions are also available through ahns.info.  Each month, you will receive an invite to register and will be provided with some pre-reading articles relevant to the material to be presented. Expectation: Fellows will attend (encouraged) or view the recorded session at least 60% of the time (7 of the 12 monthly VTBs)

3. Essential Cases in Head and Neck Oncology:  This is a case-based textbook that leads the reader through the work-up and management of different head and neck diagnoses. Each case comes complete with questions to keep the learner engaged and to facilitate recall.  The text likely is available at your institution’s medical library but if not, it can be purchased through wiley.com (price around $100-120).

4. Assessment Questions through Dosed Daily:  This is a single multiple-choice question that will be sent to you every Monday through Friday, directly from doseddaily.com. Selecting your answer will immediately take you to the website to learn the correct answer and will provide the relevant reference. Expectation: Fellows are required to complete 70% of these daily questions.

5. AHNS Surgical Videos – There are several surgical procedure videos housed on the AHNS website, and these are created by various Sections and Services of the society – fellows will periodically be sent links to certain videos that can enhance and assist with their monthly curricular assignment.
