For medical and especially surgical teaching careful observation, tolerance to uncertainty and the need to for empathy either side of the healthcare interaction is critical. The visual arts are increasingly recognized as providing powerful resources to effectively address competencies related to a more patient-centered, empathic, and holistic approach to care.

This interactive workshop draws upon the role the artistic medium of portraiture to develop emotional responses, provide alternative forms of representation, and promote dialogue in ways that parallel the relational and diagnostic challenges experienced in clinical interactions.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Mark Gilbert who has worked on a number of high profile art projects, illuminating patient and caregiver experience of illness. The resultant collections were exhibited in venues around the world, including the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Target audience: All Attendees
