PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Overview: For over a century, the Head and Neck Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has provided leadership and innovation in the field of head and neck surgery and oncology. Memorial Hospital is the cradle of modern head and neck surgery with legends in the field such as Hayes Martin, Elliot Strong and Jatin Shah. Today, the service continues this proud tradition with dedication to patient care, research, and education. As one of the largest referral centers in the world, Memorial Hospital receives patients from the greater New York area, the United States, and from all corners of the globe. The Head and Neck Service cares for more than 3,000 new patients, performs approximately 2,000 surgical procedures, and manages more than over 15,000 outpatients visits each year. The faculty members are world leaders in head and neck surgery and hold academic appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Objectives: The objective of our fellowship in advanced head and neck surgical oncology is to equip our trainees to be leaders in the field of head and neck oncology, with an experience heavily weighted toward complex surgery, with additional exposure to multidisciplinary decision-making, outpatient care, and clinical research.

The Head and Neck Service of the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center offers 1 year, 1.5 year, 2 year and 3 year senior fellowships in head and neck oncologic surgery, all of which offer one clinical year on the Head and Neck Service, approved by the AHNS Advanced Training Council, with the opportunity to pursue additional training in microvascular reconstructive surgery (1 additional year or 9 months on each service), or translational laboratory research (2 additional years). Please see the above MSK website for more detailed information.

Eligibility: Our fellowship is offered to otolaryngologists, general surgeons, or plastic surgeons who have completed their residency training and attained qualification to sit for the examination of the American Board of Otolaryngology, Surgery, or Plastic Surgery. The fellowship program is designed to offer a comprehensive training program in clinical head and neck surgery and oncology and basic research to prepare the individual for an academic career. Trainee salary, subsidized housing, health insurance and vacation are provided. Please see the MSK head and neck fellowship website for additional information.
