Biography/Statement

Mark Jameson, MD, PhD, FACS is a head and neck surgical oncologist with special training in advanced head and neck reconstructive techniques.  He completed his BA degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1992 at Point Loma Nazarene College.  In 2001, he obtained an MD and PhD in Cell & Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Jameson completed his residency training in 2006 at the University of Virginia and went on to complete a Head & Neck Surgery fellowship at the University of Iowa in 2007.  Dr. Jameson then accepted a faculty position at UVA and is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Surgery.  He also serves as the Co-Leader of the Head and Neck/Endocrine Cancer Team in the UVA Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and as Chair of the UVA Cancer Committee.

Dr. Jameson conducts basic science research on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in partnership with Dr. Daniel Gioeli in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology.  Together they are exploring the role of growth factor signaling in treatment resistance in an effort to develop new, more effective targeted therapies.  They study cell lines, xenograft models and cultures of human tumor samples using a variety of current and emerging methodologies.  Dr. Jameson is an active research mentor for medical students, graduate students, and residents.  He is also involved in the development and implementation of several clinical trials to test new surgical and medical treatment approaches.
