Areas of surgical specialization in Head and Neck Surgery

Endocrine Surgery, Head and Neck Research, Head and Neck Surgeon, Reconstructive Head & Neck Surgery

Biography/Statement

My interest in head and neck oncology began early in my exposure to otolaryngology. During my Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgery residency, I developed a profound respect for the planning and complex decision making that is involved in head and neck tumor ablation and reconstruction of the associated defect. I then pursued additional training and am completing my fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery/Microvascular Reconstruction at the University of Florida.

My research interests are centered around quality improvement and studying ways to reduce complications in head and neck surgery to improve patient experience and outcomes.

Head and Neck Research, Head and Neck Surgeon

Biography/Statement

As the sixth leading cause of cancer, head and neck cancers result in tens of thousands of deaths each year, demanding our energy, time, and resources until this disease is eradicated. We strive to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools to help us fight this devastating disease. Use the links above to learn more about our efforts. Our laboratory harnesses cutting edge technology using advanced sequencing techniques (e.g. single cell sequencing) along with a detailed understanding of biochemistry, cell biology, and animal models to characterize this challenging disease.

Head and Neck Research

Biography/Statement

My research has extensively involved understanding the role of the tumor microenvironment in facilitating head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) progression and to develop effective therapeutic interventions. The tumor microenvironment consists of cellular and acellular or matrix components. Several non-malignant cells constitute the cellular stromal environment surrounding the tumor including fibroblasts, immune cells, cells that form blood vessels (endothelial cells and pericytes) and neuronal cells. Fibroblasts are the most abundant stromal type in HNSCC. My laboratory has isolated and characterized several primary cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) lines from HNSCC tissue. My group has demonstrated that the molecular cross talk between HNSCC and CAFs that increase tumor growth, local invasion and metastasis. Further, we delineated aspects of the molecular mechanisms involved in tumor-CAF metabolic symbiosis, and HNSCC-mediated CAF secretory autophagy.

Head and Neck Surgeon, Reconstructive Head & Neck Surgery

Biography/Statement

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai with a dual appointment with the Department of Plastic Surgery.

I completed a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at UCSF.  Prior to my fellowship I completed a residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA.  I completed medical school in a medical scientist training program at NYU School of medicine.  Prior to that I earned a BA at UC Berkeley.

My clinical practice is focused on reconstructive microsurgery with a focus on mandibular reconstruction. In conjunction with OMFS we have developed one of the few Jaw-in-a-day programs in the United States, offering immediate reconstruction with implants in patients undergoing mandibular reconstruction.

I also have a focus on minimally invasive surgical approaches including the use of transoral robotic surgery for oropharyngeal tumors as well as minimal access approaches to the parotid gland.
