Biography/Statement

I am a surgeon who has worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering for over 20 years to care for people with thyroid and head and neck cancers. I have a particular expertise and interest in the surgical removal of thyroid cancer, nodal metastases from thyroid cancer, and recurrent thyroid cancer. I also have a strong interest in treating oral cancer, salivary gland tumors, melanoma, parathyroid adenomas, and other cancers involving the head and neck region.

As Chief of MSK’s Head and Neck Service, it is my privilege to lead a team of fourteen expert surgeons who perform all aspects of head and neck oncologic surgery. We are committed to providing our patients with the optimal treatment for their cancer, while also focusing on maximizing their quality of life. We collaborate closely with a renowned multidisciplinary team of physicians from endocrinology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, medical oncology, plastic surgery, dentistry, thoracic surgery and other disciplines to individualize each patient’s treatment plan for their particular condition.

Areas of surgical specialization

Head and Neck Surgeon

Biography/Statement

Dr. Mendelsohn is a fellowship trained laryngologist, or throat expert. He has transferred complex, university level and minimally invasive surgical approaches to be available within the Los Angeles community.

Dr. Mendelsohn has been on the forefront of the advanced techniques for conditions of the mouth and throat, establishing one of the largest surgical volumes on the west coast of transoral robotic cancer surgery (TORS), sialendoscopy, and hypoglossal nerve stimulator (Inspire) implantation surgery.

His undergraduate study was in Biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Yeshiva University in New York before attending the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. During his time in medical school, his research focused on voice and throat disorders, taking an extra academic year to study the treatment of spasmodic dysphonia (voice spasms). He went on to complete his residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at UCLA and was recognized for his high level of teaching as Chief Resident.

Following his surgical residency, Dr. Mendelsohn received fellowship training in Laryngology at the UCLA Voice Center, where he studied the endoscopic surgery for voice and airway disorders. He proceeded to travel abroad to receive fellowship training in Trans-Oral Laser Surgery (TLM) and Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Yvoir, Belgium. Dr. Mendelsohn has also served as a Staff Surgeon in the Division of Head & Neck Surgery at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center of Greater Los Angeles and Volunteer Staff Surgeon at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

His research has been nationally and internationally recognized, particularly in the area of studying the underlying mechanisms of voice production to preserve its function following endoscopic cancer surgical resections. Dr. Mendelsohn is a leader in endoscopic and minimally invasive head and neck surgery.

“After spending well over a decade in academic medicine involved with teaching, research, and cutting-edge surgery, I wanted to provide the patients the attention and care which they truly need and deserve. Ultimately, I have a dream to achieve: to provide the most advanced, university-level surgical care available to everyone.”

Biography/Statement

My clinical interests include head and neck cancer, upper aerodigestive tract lesions, and complex reconstructive defects. I have further interests in transoral robotic surgery (TORS), thyroid cancer, parathyroid disease, salivary gland surgery, skin cancer of the head and neck, and locoregional reconstruction of the head and neck.

I meet many patients for the first time on some of the worst days of their lives in the setting of a new diagnosis of head and neck cancer.
