Endocrine Surgery, Head and Neck Research, Head and Neck Surgeon, Reconstructive Head & Neck Surgery

Biography/Statement

Dr. Anthony C. Nichols is a Full Professor with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and with the Department of Oncology. He is Director of the Translational Head and Neck Cancer Research Program, Chief of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and the Microvascular Surgery Fellowship Director.

He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 2003. He then interned at Massachusetts General Hospital from 2003-2004, before completing his residency at the Harvard Combined Otolaryngology Program in 2008. While still at Harvard, he received fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncology and microvascular reconstruction in 2009. Under the mentorship of Dr. Jim Rocco, he pursued basic science training in the field of molecular biology of head and neck cancers in parallel with his clinical training.

Dr. Nichols joined the staff at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University as a Surgeon- Scientist in 2009, in order to establish the Translational Head and Neck Cancer Program. He has developed a multi-faceted program that introduces laboratory findings into the clinic, by way of early stage clinical trials. This group specifically studies the genetic makeup of head and neck squamous cell cancer and anaplastic thyroid cancer to see how those genes predict the response to targeted therapy and chemotherapy.

Dr. Nichols, in partner with Drs. Kevin Fung and John Yoo, established the first transoral robotic surgery (TORS) program in Canada in 2010, for the minimally invasive treatment of head and neck tumours. In partner with radiation oncologist Dr. David Palma, Dr. Nichols has run the only two completed randomized trials comparing transoral surgery with primary radiation for oropharyngeal cancer – ORATOR (Lancet Oncology 2019, Journal of Clinical Oncology 2022) and ORATOR 2 (JAMA Oncology 2022). He has also led or involved in the development of multiple other clinical trials in head and neck oncology in the context of the HEADSTART initiative, as an executive member of the the Canadian Clinical Trials Group, and as member of the NRG PULA group.

Dr. Nichols’ work with the Translational Head and Neck Cancer Research Program has led to the training of 45 students, and over $8.3 million of funding that has culminated in 148 publications.

He has served on the Council of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) and on the Board of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance (HNCA) and currently serves on the steering committee for the National Clinical Trials Network of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and on the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) Tobacco Products and Cancer Subcommittee. He has been an active Head & Neck Cancer Researcher for more than two decades with a current focus on human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Recent findings from the Yarbrough lab have been translated into clinical trials. His lab partners with Dr. Issaeva as founders of the Head & Neck Oncology Laboratory at UNC and are focused on prognostic biomarkers and developing new therapies.

Clinical Trials

LCCC 2044 : Prospective observational study to validate circulating HPVDNA and prognostic genomic biomarkers in HPV-associated OPSCC.

The purpose of the trial is to validate biomarkers for early detection of recurrent cancer and for determining which subset of patients with HPV-associated head and neck cancer have a better prognosis.  This information will be used to treat recurrences earlier and to select patients appropriate for less intensive or de-escalated therapy.
