Areas of surgical specialization in Head and Neck Surgery

Head and Neck Surgeon, Reconstructive Head & Neck Surgery

Biography/Statement

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan and attended college at Westmont College and the University of Michigan, where I graduated with a degree in Anthropology (with a focus on Medical Anthropology). I attended medical school at Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. I enjoyed almost every area of medicine I was exposed to but felt particularly drawn to use my hands to surgically care for patients.

I received my medical degree in 2015 and I trained at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. My talented mentors there instilled a passion for the care of patients with cancers of the head and neck.

I subsequently pursued subspecialty training in Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery, Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, and Transoral Robotic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, which I completed in 2021.

I came to Kaiser Permanente in October of 2021 to provide care for patients with problems of the head, neck, mouth, and throat, with a particular emphasis on treating both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors in these areas.

If you are reading this as a patient or family member of a patient, I want to thank you for entrusting your health with our team. Dealing with head and neck cancer is not easy. Like other cancers, it impacts survival, but it can also affect speech, taste, smell, swallowing, and facial appearance. I want to know my patients well enough to recognize the things in life that are important to them, so that we can partner together as a patient-physician-family team to restore the best quality of life that is possible.

The best way to do this is with a team approach. I am thrilled to work with a comprehensive team of multidisciplinary experts who all strive for the same goal: to help you not only to survive, but to thrive.

Family and Friends

I am a proud husband and father of three beautiful children.

Hobbies and interests

I enjoy outdoor activities including mountain biking, windsurfing, skiing, running, and gardening. Some special skills of mine include relentless optimism, making my wife and children giggle, and an insatiable curiosity that results in picking up new hobbies way too often. Some of my favorites books include the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
