Areas of surgical specialization in Head and Neck Surgery

Head and Neck Surgeon, Reconstructive Head & Neck Surgery

Biography/Statement

I am a fellowship trained head & neck surgeon, specializing in all aspects of ablative head & neck surgery including microvascular reconstruction and trans-oral robotic surgery.  I am a native of Long Island, New York and received my undergraduate degree in Speech & Hearing Sciences at Northwestern University.  I then obtained my M.D. degree at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC.  From there I went on to complete my residency training in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Northwestern University and a fellowship in Head & Neck Surgery and Microvascular Reconstruction at the University of California Davis.

I have a particular interest in treating advanced skin cancers of the head, face and neck.  Additionally, microvascular and regional flap reconstruction of head & neck surgical and traumatic defects makes up a significant proportion of my current practice.  I take great pride in educating not only my patients, but also medical students and our department’s resident physicians.  Currently, I am in charge of organizing medical student Otolaryngology education at the University of Tennessee.

Endocrine Surgery, Head and Neck Surgeon

Biography/Statement

Ken Kazahaya, MD, MBA, FACS, is the Associate Director of the Division of Otolaryngology, Director of Pediatric Skull Base Surgery, Medical Director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program, and Co-Lead Surgeon in the Pediatric Thyroid Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  His areas of concentration are in pediatric head and neck surgery and pediatric otology.

Dr. Kazahaya’s expertise in pediatric head and neck surgery includes management of congenital head and neck lesions, pediatric benign and malignant head and neck neoplasms, salivary gland disorders and neoplasms, and thyroid disorders and neoplasms.

Dr. Kazahaya developed endoscopic skull base surgery at CHOP and began performing endoscopic juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma resections and management of other cranial based lesions endoscopically, changing the paradigm from prior open approaches.  He has also changed the approach for management of nasal dermoids such that open anterior craniotomy is rarley required.  Dr. Kazahaya was the first pediatric surgeon to perform sialendoscopy at CHOP, and is involved in pediatric sialendoscopy on a national level.

An internationally known pediatric thyroid surgeon, Dr. Kazahaya has been the co-lead surgeon in CHOP’s Pediatric Thyroid Center since its inception in 2009.  As of February 2019, there have been over 600 pediatric thyroid surgeries performed at CHOP since 2009.  Dr. Kazahaya is an invited lecturer at many international meetings on pediatric thyroid surgery and mentors several pediatric otolaryngologists across the United States in the development of pediatric thyroid centers at their respective hospitals.
