Biography/Statement

William B. Armstrong, MD

Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, University of California, Irvine

Dr. William B. Armstrong joined the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California Irvine in July 1994, and has been department chair since July 2010.  He was appointed Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology July 2009.

Dr. Armstrong’s primary clinical and research interests are in head and neck cancer surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery.  He has a strong interest in minimally invasive procedures to treat head and neck tumors including endoscopic and robotic approaches to head and neck and thyroid tumors.  He is actively involved with the Optical Coherence Tomography Project at UC Irvine and Beckman Laser Institute.  In addition, he is utilizing office based ultrasound in the outpatient setting and resident education.

Since 1999, Dr. Armstrong is happily married to his wife Susan, and they have two children William Harry, born December 2000 and Eric Byron born February 2002.  Recreational interests include jogging, hiking, backpacking, cooking, planting fruit trees and participating in activities with his two boys.  The most recent addition to the family is Ricky our second lab, who is keeping everyone more active.

Biography/Statement

Dr. Emre Vural earned his medical degree at the Ankara University School of Medicine in Turkey where he also completed a residency in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery.  He completed fellowship trainings at UAMS in head and neck surgery and in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. 

Dr. Vural’s clinical interests include head and neck surgery for the treatment of benign or malignant tumors of the facial skin, mouth, throat, nose, sinuses, salivary glands, neck and thyroid gland as well as cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery and rehabilitation of the paralyzed face. He is double-board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Vural is a member of numerous medical organizations, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, American College of Surgeons, American Head and Neck Society and European Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Vural is an active contributor to the medical literature in the area of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, presented in national and international conferences and served as an editorial board member and as a reviewer in many prestigious otolaryngology journals.

Biography/Statement

Dr. Resto graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1992 with a bachelor degree in Chemistry.  He then completed the combined M.D., Ph.D. program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2000.  His doctoral degree is from the Department of Human Genetics for dissertation work in cancer genetics.  He next pursued internship training in General Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by residency training in the Harvard Combined Program in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.  In 2006, he completed advanced clinical fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncology, Skull Base, and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.  He joined the full time faculty staff at UTMB in July, 2006.

Clinically, he focuses on facial plastics, reconstructive surgery, and skull base surgery.   Scientifically, Dr. Resto focuses on the study of HPV genetics in head and neck cancer as well as disparities in treatment outcomes.
