Biography/Statement

Carissa M. Thomas, M.D., Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Thomas is from northern Wisconsin. She received her doctorate of medicine and doctorate of philosophy in cell and molecular biology at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed an otolaryngology residency at the University of Colorado and a head and neck and microvascular reconstructive surgery fellowship at the University of Toronto. Her clinical specialty is microvascular reconstruction for head and neck cancer. Her research involves understanding how cancer changes the composition of the oral cavity microbiome and how bacteria communicate with immune cells in the tumor microenvironment with the future goal of altering the microbiome to improve treatment response and prevent recurrence and metastases of head and neck cancer.

Biography/Statement

Dr. Teng received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, after which she completed residency training at Mount Sinai, and advanced fellowship training in Head and Neck Cancer & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.

A diplomate of the American Board of Otolarygology and an active member of the American Head & Neck Society, Dr. Teng is an expert in head and neck surgical oncology, reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, and salivary gland diseases and tumors.  Her clinical interests include squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, microvascular reconstructive surgery, and thyroid and parathyroid diseases, and robotic surgery.  She also has a particular focus in minimally invasive salivary gland treatment, including sialendoscopy.

Dr. Teng is the residency program director for the Department of Otolaryngology, which is one of the top training programs in the country. She has a vested interest in the training of future physicians in the field, and is active in national organizations focused on maximizing the quality of surgical education.

Biography/Statement

Dr. Grillone is the M. Stuart Strong and Charles W. Vaughan Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Otolaryngologist-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center (BMC). He received his Medical Degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (now the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai) in 1983. He then went on to do his internship in General Surgery at Tufts-New England Medical Center and residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in the Boston University-Tufts University Combined Otolaryngology Training Program. In 1988 he joined the full time faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at BMC and BUSM where he has remained since. He served as Residency Program Director from 1998 to 2015 and as Vice Chair of the department from 1999 to 2017. Dr. Grillone has also held several leadership positions at the institutional level at BMC including President of the Medical Staff from 2006 to 2008, Interim Vice President and Chief Medical Officer from 2007 to 2008, Associate Chief Medical Officer from 2008 to 2014, and Chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee from 2006 to 2014.            Dr. Grillone served as President of the American Broncho-Esophagological Association from 2014 to 2015 and as President of the New England Otolaryngological Society from 2000 to 2001. Dr. Grillone is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Edmund Prince Fowler Award in 2016 from the Triological Society for outstanding basic science research, Best Doctors in Boston (Boston Magazine) every year since 2006, America’s Top Doctors (Castle-Connolly) every year since 2005. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

Dr. Grillone’s areas of clinical expertise include Laryngology and Professional Voice, Head and Neck Surgery and Sleep Surgery. He has special expertise Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) techniques to treat head and neck cancer including robotic surgery and laser surgery. Dr. Grillone’s is the recipient of several NIH grants to study various aspects of head and neck cancer. His research interests include early detection of head and neck cancer and margin guidance in head and neck tumor surgery using spectroscopy.

An Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology, Dr. Dundar joined Texas Tech Physicians in September 2019.  Dr. Dundar completed his medical school education at Hacettepe University in 2007 and completed his otolaryngology residency in Yildirim Beyazit Training and Research Hospital in 2012.  Dr. Dundar completed his fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery from Wayne State University.  Dr. Dundar specializes in all aspects of head and neck oncology, including cutaneous malignancies, salivary gland cancers, thyroid cancers, mucosal head and neck cancers.  He also performs complex microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck as well as transoral robotic surgery.
