Biography/Statement

Kerstin Stenson, MD, FACS, completed her residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at University of Illinois in Chicago and her fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction at the University of Michigan. She is an active member in the American Head and Neck Society and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She serves on the editorial board of Head and Neck, and has more than 100 head and neck-related publications and book chapters. She has expertise in all aspects of head and neck surgical oncology for head and neck tumors, from those with early-stage cancer who require local reconstructions, to those with advanced tumors whose care entails a multidisciplinary treatment approach. She has special interest in patients with recurrent tumors and those who have recurrences, complications after chemoradiation and complex wounds.

Dr Spiro has practiced head and neck surgical oncology at U Conn Health for over 30 years. He is a graduate of SUNY Upstate Health Sciences University, and completed his otolaryngology residency at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital followed by fellowship training in head and neck surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Biography/Statement

Richard V. Smith, MD, FACS, is an Attending Physician in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Director of the Head and Neck Service for the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care. He is also a Professor of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Pathology and Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His clinical focus is on head and neck surgery, including transoral robotic and laser surgery for throat and larynx cancer, salivary gland, thyroid, and parathyroid surgery.

 

Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Arts in 1984 at Middlebury College. In 1990, he received his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed an internship in Surgery, followed by a residency in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital.

 

Dr. Smith’s research focuses on genetic changes (and how these affect treatment) and quality of life issues in head and neck cancer, and on surgical education and simulation. His work has been published in numerous journals, books, and reviews, and presented internationally at lectures and meetings.

 

From 2009 to 2019, Dr. Smith has been listed as one of New Yorks Best Doctors in New York Magazine, and from 2010 to 2019 has been listed on New York Times Magazine’s list of Super Doctors. He received the Children’s Humanitarian Award from the Children’s Tumor Foundation in 2007, has received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2010, a Presidential Citation from the American Head and Neck Society in 2011 and the Academic Achievement Award from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 2015. Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and a member of many organizations, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American College of Surgeons and American Head and Neck Society.
