Please save the date during the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting in Washington, DC for the 2012 Sisson Symposium.  This half-day session will provide comprehensive review of the current standards of care, surgical techniques, and important study topics for head and neck oncology and surgery.  This free course is jointly sponsored by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck (AAO-HNSF) and the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) and is open to residents and fellows.  Complimentary lunch will be provided.

In Memoriam: Loring Pratt, MD, Former AHNS President
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Loring Pratt, MD. Loring Pratt was born in Farmington, Maine. He graduated with an AB from Middlebury College in 1940 and three years later earned his MD from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Pratt completed his residency in otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and served in the United States Air Force before entering into private practice in Waterville, Maine. He is a past president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the American Laryngological Association, the American Broncho-Esophagological Association, and the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery.

PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION 2012 COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANTS

Due to the great success of the American Head and Neck Society’s Prevention and Early Detection Committee’s Community Service grant in previous years and the high number of excellent submissions, the Committee has received AHNS Board approval to offer two (2) Community Service grants in support of a project related to Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week (OHANCAW) activities in a community setting. Each grant, in the amount of one thousand dollars, will be given to an individual, department, organization, or institution in support of a patient or community-oriented project during OHANCAW-2010. We are not only looking for projects from the United States, but are also accepting applications from worldwide.

An application letter should include a detailed description of the project, the targeted population, the methods, expected outcome, expected impact on community health and/or on our knowledge and understanding of head and neck cancer prevention and early detection, estimated/actual cost, and other available funding.

The closing date for receipt of applications is April 30, 2012. Take Part in Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week ®
The 15th Annual Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week® (OHANCAW®) is scheduled for April 22-28, 2012. Sponsored by the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, OHANCAW is a weeklong series of events promoting awareness of this life-threatening but treatable (if caught early) disease, highlighted by a day of free oral cancer screenings held at medical offices, centers and institutions throughout the country. All members can participate by conducting a free screening at their medical practice, clinic, hospital or university. The Alliance supports screening sites by providing free materials, including posters, T-shirts and media kits, to help set up and promote the activity. In Memoriam: Duane Sewell, MD, PhD, Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Duane Sewell, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, who passed away on November 27, 2011 following a battle with gastric cancer. He was only 44 years old.

AHNS Humanitarian Committee and Project

AHNS Council will establish a Humanitarian Committee with the following charge: The Humanitarian Committee will encourage and support the efforts of AHNS membership to assist underserved populations at home and abroad through volunteer activities and will seek to develop shared resources for communication, encouragement, development of resources and organization of activities. [AHNS does not endorse or encourage any particular faith, but recognizes that good work and opportunities are often accomplished by particular faith-based organizations. Individual members are free to work with such organizations, and the AHNS humanitarian committee will support their efforts in an ecumenical nonsectarian manner. For more information, click here »
