After deferring medical school enrollment to complete a year of volunteer youth ministry, he attended Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) where he earned his M.D. with Honors in 2005. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha as a junior student and served multiple leadership roles in the medical school including Class President and organizer of the initial Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency at BCM in 2010 and received multiple teaching awards. He went on to Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship at the University of Kansas and Children’s Mercy Hospital, and joined the Children’s Mercy faculty in 2011. In 2012, he returned to private practice in Houston for family reasons and was elected by his medical peers as a “Texas Super Doctor Rising Star” and then “Texas Super Doctor” annually from 2012-2017. In 2014, he was invited to begin teaching in the BCM Basic Sciences Curriculum and was recruited to the BCM Pediatric Otolaryngology faculty at Texas Children’s Hospital in 2015. Dr. Chelius directs the Texas Children’s Hospital Multidisciplinary Pediatric Head and Neck Tumor Program and is a member of the Texas Children’s Multidisciplinary Thyroid Tumor Program. He has presented nationally on these topics in multiple peer-reviewed venues. Dr. Chelius is a leader in organized medicine, having served extensively in local and national otolaryngology organizations. He is the current Chair of the AAO-HNS Young Physicians Section and leads the pediatric otolaryngology subgroup of the Annual Meeting Program Committee.
