My wife worked as a nurse and I as a close tolerance machinist to pay for my education.

Head & Neck Surgery Fellowship under Drs. W.O. Mahoney & Robert G. Chambers @ Walter Reed AMC,
Greater Baltimore Medical Center & Johns Hopkins Hosp. 1967-68

U.S. Army 20 years (Colonel)
Anti aircraft Battalion surgeon in Mannheim, Germany 1958-60 (Awarded Army Commendation Medal)
Asst. Neurosurgeon in Landstuhl, Germany 1960-61
General Practice Green Bay, WI 1961-63
Vietnam 1967-68: Chief Surgeon 71st Evacuation Hosp. Pleiku, Viet Nam (battle of DakTo with 1,000 casualties in 19 days and 145 in one afternoon).
Commander 7th M.A.S.H. near Xuan Loc, Viet Nam (95 casualties in one day) (Awarded The Soldiers Medal for Heroism after removing a live rocket propelled grenade from a soldier’s back.)
(Awarded The Legion of Merit for outstanding leadership as commander.)
(Awarded “Vietnamese Honor Medal-1st Class”)
Returned to Walter Reed; Remained from 1968 until late 1977 as Chief of H&N Surgery, Asst Ch Gen. Surgery & Consultant to the Surgeon General
Awarded Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster for “Outstanding performance in a position of high responsibility.”

Retired from the army 1977 & joined Dr. R.G. Chambers in Baltimore in his “HUGE” practice out of 5 hospitals. Residents from 10 programs rotated through our practice. After Dr. Chambers’s death in 1981, I brought into the practice Drs. R.M. Hirata & J.R. Saunders whom Dr. Chambers & I had mentored. As with Drs. Grant Ward & R.G. Chambers before us, we rose thru the ranks of The Society of Head & Neck Surgeons to become president in our time. I was honored to serve in 1984.
During my 45-year career I participated in research; authored book chapters & book reviews; presented 95 papers worldwide; wrote 44 published scientific articles; and devised operations, techniques & procedures, always living by the motto “Give it what it deserves”.
